The basic activity for young kids
It is common sense that the kids eventually will getting bored after all this wandering to the museums. At the article: Activities for families I believe I provided you enough interactive museums to delay this. But still…you need to fulfil their spare time constructively. In that way, they will gain enjoyable memories from their vacations to Athens. That is to say that there are many playgrounds & parks around Athens to play joyful interactive toys with your kids. Each playground could be inside a park or outside. Or they can play with Greek kids of similar age. Remember that in Greece we are learning the English language from the age of 8. So, it will be easy to communicate with each other.
Below you can see the subdivided regional units of Attica and their municipalities. I will write down few of the bigger playgrounds in Attica, spreading them in each area. However, I can not list all of them. Certainly, at each region, I will give you about 5-7. Since, its region has many-many smaller playgrounds around the neighborhoods. Also, I will record for you how far each one is from the city center, meaning from Syntagma square. Most importantly, I will tell you all the playgrounds that have secure and modern surrounding to play and do sports.
Municipalities of Attica
- Central Athens: Athens. Dafni-Ymittos. Filadelfeia-Chalkidona. Galatsi. Ilioupoli. Kaisariani. Vyronas. Zografou.
- Southern suburbs: Agios Dimitrios. Alimos. Elliniko-Argyroupoli. Glyfada. Kallithea. Moschato-Tavros. Nea Smyrni. Palaio Faliro.
- Northern suburbs: Agia Paraskevi. Chalandri. Filothei-Psychiko. Irakleio. Kifissia. Lykovrysi-Pefki. Marousi. Metamorfosi. Nea Ionia. Papagou-Cholargos. Penteli. Vrilissia.
- Western Attica: Agia Varvara. Agioi Anargyroi-Kamatero. Aigaleo. Haidari. Ilion. Peristeri. Petroupoli.
- East Attica: Acharnes. Dionysos. Kropia. Lavreotiki. Marathon. Markopoulo. Oropos. Paiania. Pallini. Rafina-Pikermi. Saronikos. Spata-Artemida. Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni.
- Piraeus: Keratsini-Drapetsona. Korydallos. Nikaia-Agios Ioannis. Rentis. Perama. Piraeus.
- Islands: Aegina. Agistri. Hydra. Kythira. Poros. Salamis. Spetses. Troizinia-Methana.
Authorities
In the same vein, the Organization of Culture-Sports and Youth of the Municipality of Athens is responsible for these playgrounds. It called ΟΠΑΝΔΑ-OPANDA and it has rebuilt and equipped those. In addition to that, OPANDA has taken all the necessary measures to comply with the hygiene conditions, but also the operating rules of the premises. Most importantly, it disposes security to avoid vandalism and disasters and cleaning services to preserve them net.
Bonus: Above all, most of these playgrounds are suitable and accessible to children with mobility difficulties.
Note: Certainly, the playgrounds are usually open from the sunrise to sunset. Except, for those that I will give you the exact closing hours.
Playgrounds & parks in Central Athens

National Gardens’ playground
Zappeio. Address: 1 Queen Amalia’s avenue, PC 10557, Athens. 650m from Syntagma square by feet. It is a historical national park among the trees with many exotic plants and ruins, duck lakes, coffee place, the playground aaand…a kid’s library. For preschool, school age and adolescents with safety for those who have wheelchair. All the toys are built with natural wood and promote the creative game.

Playground of Kolokynthous
Address: Kleovidos & 14 Onata street, PC 10443, Kolokynthous, Athens. It is 4,4km from Syntagma and about 26minutes with public transports. The playground refers to 0-15 years old children. However, it has one disadvantage – flaw. It is without shading.

Attiko Alsos
Attica Grove. Address: Galatsi, PC 11476. 4,8km from Syntagma is about 45minutes by public transportation. It has 2 playgrounds with many innovative climbing games. Besides them, it also has open-air cinema, 2 coffee places, 10 free courtyards for tennis, basket, volleyball and football. Moreover, you can see many small turtles to wander around. For instance, you can organize your child’s birthday party with the coffee place. Noting that the coffee shop offers parking lot. Most importantly, it has a separated parking for disables even closer to the center of the park.

Párko Analípseos Výrona
Byron Ascension Park. Address: 35 Analipseos street, PC 16231, Vyronas. 2,8km from Syntagma and about 24minutes with public transports. Above all, it has a large bicycle path and 2 playgrounds with safety devices. That is to say that refers to infants, preschoolers and toddlers.

Álsos Kaisarianís
Kaisariani Grove. Address: Heroes’ Shooting Range, PC 16121 Kaisariani. 2,4km from Syntagma and 18min by public transport. The enclosure playground next to the open-air cinema has many lights, in order to host the kids until late.
Bonus: It has traffic park, in order for the kids to learn properly the road’s traffic signs.

Párko Goudí
Goudi Park. Address: George Papandreou, Zografou. 3,2km from Syntagma and 23min by public transport. In short, the wooden playground has around it tennis, football and basket courts. Additionally, it has a refreshment room and an indoor gym.

Veikou Park
Address: PC 11147, Galatsi. 7,2km from Syntagma and 45min by public transport or 20min by car. To sum up, the park offers several facilities like new playgrounds, fitness equipment and skateboard track. Moreover, it has summer cinema, swimming pool, soccer & basketball courts. The playground is open until 22:00. It has dogs’ amusement park and a coffee place.
Bonus: Most importantly, up in Filothei’s hill, you can participate to Nordic walking of 5km or to trail races of 5 & 10km.
To clarify, I told you earlier that I cannot list all the playgrounds for each municipality. On the other hand, I will refer many of them for the central Athens with a simple reference below.

Álsos Néas Filadélfeias
New Philadelphia Grove. New Philadelphia, PC 14341. 8km from Syntagma. Firstly, it has a weather station and an outdoor gym. Secondly, it has a zoo with day animals like turtles, carderines, crucifixes, hawks, moorhens, thrushes, green parrots. Also, it has many toads, quails and partridges at the little island with the watermill and the lake around it. However, the playground refers only to preschool, school age and toddlers.

Serafio
It is a playground and swimming pool. 121 Peiraeus street. 3km from Syntagma. For 1-12 years old and disabled kids. Courts for teenagers.

Panteleimon playground
Square of St. Panteleimon. 2,8km. Access for disabled kids.

Technopolis playground and Industrial Gas Museum
100 Peiraeus street, Gazi. 2,2km. Interactive games and laboratories for kids and parents. It has a really big slide.

Vikela & Lampaki, 11145, Kato Patisia. Contemporary toys. Suitable for disabled kids.

Aesthetic Forest of Ymittos
Papagos, Cholargos. 7,1km. To sum up, it hosts sights such as the Monastery of Kaisariani, the churches of Ag. Mark and the Brigadiers. In addittion, it has the chapel of the Ascension, the monasteries of St. Ioannis Prodromou and Ag. Georgiou Koutalas and others. It is suitable for cycling and hiking.
