Basics 101
Itinerary – must see
You will ask me: why I have to visit Athens? It’s just a capital of the country. Just a cement city. Why not only the islands of Greece or the countryside instead? Weeeell…….Hopefully you will love Athens, as much as I do. Therefore, I hope that you will have a memorable experience in Athens. Just follow the rythm of this vibrant city and you will discover many interesting things to do…and most of the flights passing by the Athenian Airport. Therefore, you could ‘create’ the time before going to islands or after them.
I am aware about the stopover. Most tourists usually stop only for one day or two before heading to our beautiful sunny islands, buuuut….. I am an Athenian girl and I like staying here. Hopefully you’re gonna love Athens if you see it through my eyes and I am willing to convince you.
Athens it’s a typically historical capital with lively distinctive diversity among the people. You will not be dissapointed, since it has lots to see according to your preferences.
Which will be your itinerary at the capital to avoid boredom these few days you will stay going towards islands?
Let’s start from the center of Athens. The metro station from the airport or the train from Peiraeus port allows you to disembark at Monastiraki square.
Coffee -bars
There are many-many-many coffee places and terrace bars at the centre of Athens. Over there you can drink your coffee in peace and quiet. Other wise, you could wrangle with the next table about political issues between countries. In a roof top bar you would doubtless taste a cold cocktail looking at the beautiful view. Or observe the mobility of people-ants walking around going to work. I am sure that you will enjoy your inactivity of your thoughts. Simultaneously, you will realize that every now and then we all need a break. Just a pause from our daily routine to clear up our minds.
My perfect part of itinerary is to wander around. So,the next best thing to relax in the center of the city is to walk around without a cause, meaningless. Just start rambling and eventually you will relax and discover hidden treasures. For example, the gentrified neighborhood of Psirri (one of the oldest quarters of Athens, among the 5first neighborhoods). Moreover, there are many quiet boutique hotels or bigger ones over there. Further, al of them have pools and they are among Greek traditional taverns and restaurants. Continuing your stroll to Thissio neighborhood and passing through Apostolou Pavlou street you can taste fried corn or fried chestnuts. Or cotton candy and rooster shape lollipops. There are many street vendors during your walk. Try them all the way, until you will pass the Odeon of Herodus Atticus and reach Acropolis museum.
Archaeological sites
You are already there, so…….. you h-a-v-e t-o s-e-e the Acropolis (as 2nd day’s itinerary –I propose- Ancient Agora and the change of Guards, the Panathinian Olympic stadium and Temple of Zeus). It’s like going to Venice and didn’t take a venetian gondola for a ‘walk’. Or going to Paris and you didn’t climb to the Eiffel Tower. So, the magnificent Doric temple of Parthenon at the top of Acropolis was built at 447BC. You will remain speechless from the decorations and the many pillars. It is a huge experience to come and explore all the above.* Oh trust me. It will definitely stimulate your brain. With no doubt, you will certainly find your calmness by starring the Aegean Sea and the view of the whole Athens.
Meanwhile you can continue your promenade at the bottom of Acropolis to Anafiotika. This area is part of the old historical neighborhood of Plaka. Over there you can see the architecture and stepping down to Monastiraki square to discover artifacts-antiques inside the flea market.
Food
Finally, do not forget the food. The food in Greece has the bigger part of our culture. Certainly you have to participate to culinary lessons in order to learn how to prepare Greek delicacies like spanakopita (spinach pie) and mouzaka (eggplant casserole) and tzatziki (yogurt dip). Or you could simply eat all of them in a picturesque tavern. Try souvlaki and mezze and sea food. If you are looking for vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free food I can assure you that the Greek cuisine is full of them. Because, it has many vegetables, legumes, fresh so-soooo flavored fruits and variety of nutritious olives.
I am confident that you will not be bored and since the sea is close to the centre with the tram from Syntagma square (or from Monastiraki square with a hop on-hop off bus), you could definitely see the Athenian Riviera and having lunch at one of many beach bars or continuing dancing with your bathing suit as the night is coming. In other words just refresh yourselves to your hotel’s pool in the middle of the day and then continue rambling. Put an extra day to your itinerary for that.
If you have more days you can try indoor or outdoor activities. Indoor: yoga lessons every morning, couples massage inside your room, face-hair-nails treatment inside the privacy of your room (because: happy wife, happy life). Outdoor: tours to vineyards, wine tours inside Athens, picnic to the remaining of the old palace of Tatoi. Either you can try fun park for grown ups, zoo visit, escape rooms. Or even a limba range room to express your anger and energy in a safety environment. Or choose a leisure activity like brunch. Whether you will choose on the opposite side activities like kayak/scuba diving and bike/electric bike/boat. In that way, you will see more neighborhoods and more culture.
And many-many more.
As you can see, there are many things to do in Athens or outside and around the city. Do you have enought time? And….. what do you prefer? Calmness or activities? I certainly have proposals for you or I can arrange for you. I will be happy to propose few activities of your preferences and where you could find the correct prices for you, like a tour biking inside Athens, bus tour to Temple of Hera, visit Sparta or go on bikes to the island of Spetses or Poros/Hydra, to taste fine Greek wines in Nemea, to see Greek monasteries or even suggest an agrotourism tour at Lake Stymfalia, where Hercules killed the Stymphalian Birds. Ask for it and I will gladly advice you.
So…….pick your own itinerary and……see you soon in the center of Athens.
*Travel tip: Ladies, the Greek Government abandoned stilletos shoes from Acropolis, due to many damages to the marble steps from these shoes.
Check out why Athens is a city break and not just a stopover.
